THE HIDDEN FACE OF VENICE CARNIVAL
The Venice Carnival is still one of the most famous carnivals in the world, rivalled only by Rio. But it is much more than 10 days of partying, dressing up, dancing the night away at masked balls and getting frisky in gondolas. It a license to do whatever you want, however you want: gambling, flirting, insulting people, committing incredible indiscretions and even change sex. Protected by the anonymity of a mask, you need never worry about the consequences... But as Adventurous as it may seem, today's Carnival is a much smaller and tamer affair than it was in 17th and 18th centuries...when the scullery maid dressed up as a queen, the doge dressed as a squire, the impoverished nobleman went about as a rich one, the shy bookkeeper tried his hand as a libertine, and the whore miraculously became a virgin. Venice Carnival unmasked takes us back in time to reveal what gave birth to the Venetian celebration, and how it became the "must attend" event of the European social calendar The programme will expose the true motives of the carnival. We will explain why the original 10 day celebration which spawned every kind of excess and debauchery imaginable was later stretched to last 6 months; how parties, lavish performances, balls, banquets spread from palaces to convents with the foreseeable results; how the oldest profession in the world was industrialized and unionised; how Venice was the original Vegas for it is there that the casinos were born; how it was also the original Broadway for its theatre then surpassed all other European stages...We will also show how Carnival saved Venice from the precipice of bankruptcy, why it led to the creation of the most powerful secret police of the era and how it, then and now, continues to tear the city apart, dividing it in 2 camps: those who hate Carnival and those who love it!

STORIA E SEGRETI DI UNO DEI CARNEVALI PIù FAMOSO DEL MONDO
Il Carnevale di Venezia è ancora uno dei più famosi carnevali del mondo, al pari solo di Rio de Janeiro. Ma è molto di più di 10 giorni di festa, splendidi abiti, balli in maschera che durano fino all'alba e giochi notturni nelle gondole… E'una licenza di fare quello che vuoi, come vuoi: giocare d'azzardo, flirtare, insultare la gente, essere incredibilmente impertinenti e persino cambiare sesso. Protetti dall'anonimato di una maschera, non è necessario preoccuparsi delle conseguenze... Ma, anche se può sembrare una antastica avventura, oggi il Carnevale si è molto ridimensionato ed è meno licenzioso di quanto non lo fosse nel ‘600 e ‘700... quando la cameriera vestiva da regina, il doge vestiva da scudiero, il nobile decaduto cercava di passare ancora per ricco, il timido contabile si improvvisava libertino, e la puttana miracolosamente tornò vergine. Carnevale, le due facce di Venezia, ci porta indietro nel tempo per rivelare ciò che portò alla nascita delle celebrazioni veneziane, e come diventò l'evento "must" del calendario mondano europeo. Nel film verranno svelati i veri motivi del carnevale. Spiegheremo il motivo per cui la celebrazione originale di 10 giorni che ha generato ogni tipo di eccesso e depravazione immaginabile, è stata successivamente prolungata per arrivare fino a 6 mesi; come feste, sontuosi spettacoli, balli, banchetti passarono dai palazzi nobiliari ai conventi, con risultati prevedibili; come la più antica professione del mondo è stata industrializzata e sindacalizzata; come Venezia è stata una Las Vegas ante litteram, perchè è lì che nacquero I casino, come è stato anche l'archetipo di Broadway con tutti I suoi teatri, poi superato da tutti gli altri teatri europei... Dimostreremo anche come il Carnevale abbia salvato Venezia dal precipizio del fallimento, e perché lì fu creata la più potente polizia segreta del tempo e in che modo, allora e oggi, continua a dividere la città in 2 campi: quelli che odiano il Carnevale e coloro che lo amano!
