The rushes show a Thelonious Monk who is in the grip of the violent factory of stereotypes from which he tries to escape.
The film becomes the crossing of this great artist, who would like to exist only for his music. And the portrait in hollow of a media machine as ridiculous as it is revolting.
Here is the machine in action. Deconstructing these rushes as phantasms. To see the factory of caricatures at work. Deaf, smiling, ambiguous, admiring and sickening. To hold the microphone without listening, to marvel without seeing.
Trying to overturn the point of view.
Here is Thelonious going through the ordeal, at work, as if he had landed on a strange planet, where a portrait is being made that he cannot do anything about. Tired by the years spent undergoing this painful exercise.
Fortunately, he plays, and in doing so, he makes more than anything else be said.

Im Dezember 1969 wird Thelonious Monk in Paris vor seinem Konzert von einem Team des französischen Fernsehens gefilmt.
Das Material zeigt in erschreckender Weise, welchen Stereotypen Monk ausgesetzt ist und wie er versucht, sich ihnen zu entziehen.
Rewind & Play ist das Porträt eines Ausnahmekünstlers, der nur für seine Musik leben möchte, und mit einer lächerlichen und abstoßenden Reproduktionsanstalt für Klischees konfrontiert wird.
Die Fernsehaufnahmen entlarven sich als Phantasmen, sie zeigen, wie Karikaturen produziert werden. Von lächelnden Leuten, die voller Bewunderung sind, gleichzeitig taub, unsensibel, doppeldeutig und widerwärtig, die das Mikrofon halten, ohne zuzuhören, die staunen, ohne zu sehen.
Ein Versuch, den Blickwinkel einmal umzukehren.
Das Fernsehteam ist eine Zumutung. Als wäre Thelonious Monk auf einem anderen Planeten gelandet, wo ein Porträt von ihm entstehen soll, auf das er keinen Einfluss hat. Die Wiederholungen solcher schmerzhaften Erlebnisse haben ihn über die Jahre müde gemacht.
Zum Glück spielt er Klavier und bringt dadurch mehr zum Ausdruck als alles andere.
