It deals with the illusions of masculinity.

Hachemi, a young wood-carver in the old city of Sfax,struggles with his past on the eve of his marriage. Hisfriend Farfat has been banished by his father; a scandalensues and Hachemi relives those tragic moments whenHachemi and Farfat, at age ten, were raped by Ameur,their caretaker. His wounded gaze reflects the violent andsecret torment that is ever-present in Hachemi: on everystreet corner, his past becomes the present, traumatizeshim and puts his very future in peril. Is he really a man? Orstill a child? He sets forth to discover his past without reallyknowing why. His sole refuge is friendship, but this too hasbeen torn asunder by the "forced" departure of Jako, Levy'sgrandson. Only Touil the blacksmith, Azaiez the baker andFarfat the rebel remain. They dream of happiness, drowningall taboos in the foam of their beer. These young men, onthe brink of manhood, still see life through childlike eyes, forwhich society condemns them.

Il suo unico rifugio è l'amicizia, andata anch'essain pezzi dopo la partenza "forzata" di Jako, nipote di Levy.Restano solo il fabbro Touil, Azaiez il fornaio e Farfat ilribelle. Sognano tutti la felicità, affogando tutti i tabù nellaschiuma delle loro birre. Questi giovani, presto uomini,guardano ancora le cose con occhio infantile. E per questola società li condanna.
