Konso, Southern Ethiopia, February 2005.
When Woldedawit, the 19th poqalla of Kala lineage (Konso chiefs) dies, his son Gezagn, an engineer in Addis Ababa, comes back to his homeland to become a poqalla. The ceremony closing the mourning period for his father, to which all the clan members must participate, precedes his investiture. The peace of the deceased, the Kala family, and the whole Konso society relies on the smooth running of these events. In spite of his difficult situation, Ayano, a modest farmer, insists that his village participates in the ceremony, even if it means getting into debt to buy the bull necessary for the ritual. Anxiety builds up when the Ganshalo, the man chosen by the deceased's family to play the drum which opens and closes the mourning period, flees to the lowlands. The difficulties encountered during the preparation of the ritual lead Gezagn and the Konso to question their tradition.
