Erik Gandini was born and grew up in Italy. His first feature documentary Raja Sarajevo from 1994 is about a group of young friends in the besieged city of Sarajevo. It was shot during the war with a small hi-8 camera and gained great international exposure.
Since then Erik Gandini has produced a number of internationally acclaimed feature documentaries, such as Not without Prijedor (1996) about Bosnian refugees in Sweden returning to fight the war, Amerasians (1998) about the 100,000 children of american soldiers left in Vietnam.
Sacrificio - Who betrayed Che Guevara?, directed in 2001 with Tarik Saleh, questions the legends around the death of Che Guevara. The film started an inflamed debate all over Europe and Latinamerica.
Surplus: terrorized into being consumers was directed and produced by Erik Gandini in 2003. Shot in China, the US, Cuba, Italy, Hungary, India, Canada and Sweden and edited by editor/composer Johan Söderberg. This personal visual odyssey about the destructive nature of consumer culture won one of the most prestigious awards a documentary can get: the Silver Wolf from the 2003 IDFA, International Documentary Filmfestival Amsterdam. It is still widely shown, has taken Erik to extended lecturing tours and has so far been selected to more than 70 festivals around the world.
His latest film, GITMO - The new rules of war, co-directed with Tarik Saleh, premiered at the 2005 IDFA in Amsterdam where it was selected for the prestigious Joris Ivens competition and to the Amnesty International Award. GITMO has been awarded a first prize at the 2006 Seattle International Film Festival. Moreover it was awarded with the Special Grand Jury Mention at the 2006 Miami Film Festival.
